The Pattern Dr. Alberto Is Tracking
Four infectious diseases. Four different pathogens. All appearing or expanding in new places across the United States at the same time. From Florida, where Dr. Alberto lives and practices, the pattern is hard to ignore.

Confirmed cases in Florida in 2026. Traditionally a tropical disease, dengue is appearing in US states as Aedes aegypti mosquito habitat expands northward with rising temperatures.
๐ฆ West Nile virus
Increasing presence in northeastern US states. Longer warm seasons mean longer periods of active Culex mosquito populations โ and more transmission opportunities.
๐ฆ Vibrio vulnificus
"Flesh-eating bacteria" spreading along warming Gulf and Atlantic coasts. As seawater temperatures rise, Vibrio vulnificus thrives in waters that were previously too cold for its proliferation.
๐ง Naegleria fowleri
The brain-eating amoeba is finding suitable warm freshwater habitat in states further north than historically recorded. As lake and river temperatures rise, its geographic range expands.
These are not coincidences. They share a common driver: a shift in the environmental conditions that determine where infectious disease agents can survive, reproduce, and reach human hosts.
The Epidemiology Tripod
In epidemiology, the emergence and spread of infectious disease is understood through the interaction of three factors. Dr. Alberto calls it a tripod โ and like any tripod, the balance between all three legs determines what stands.

Climate change acts on the 3rd leg โ shifts the entire balance of the tripod
The pathogens themselves have not changed. What has changed is the environment in which they operate. Climate change does not create new diseases. But it makes the environment dramatically more favorable for their spread โ expanding geographic range, extending transmission seasons, and accelerating the life cycles of the vectors that carry them.
How Climate Shifts the Disease Landscape
Warmer water โ coastal and freshwater
Vibrio vulnificus requires water above ~13ยฐC to proliferate. As Gulf and Atlantic coastal waters warm, the geographic range of viable Vibrio habitat expands northward. Naegleria fowleri similarly requires warm freshwater โ and is finding it in lakes that were previously too cold.
Milder winters + longer summers
Mosquito populations are limited by cold temperatures that kill larvae and halt reproduction. As winters become milder and summers longer, mosquito season extends โ and the window of dengue and West Nile transmission grows. Ticks, similarly, are surviving at higher latitudes and altitudes.
Geographic expansion northward
Vectors are actively spreading into territories where they could not previously survive. Ticks carrying Lyme disease have reached previously cold northern regions. Aedes aegypti โ the dengue mosquito โ is establishing populations in states where it was never previously found.
It's Not Climate Alone
Climate change is the most significant environmental driver of this pattern โ but it does not act alone. Dr. Alberto identifies four amplifying factors:

Urbanization: cities concentrate people and create more points of contact between humans and pathogens.
Travel: infectious agents cross geographic borders in hours. A disease that establishes itself in one region can seed another within days.
Land use change: humans encroach on new habitats, bringing them into contact with vectors and animal reservoirs that were previously separate.
Improved detection: better laboratory methods and greater clinical awareness mean we now identify cases that would previously have been missed or misattributed. Some of the apparent increase in disease incidence is also an increase in our ability to see it.
The result, in Dr. Alberto’s framing, is a “perfect combination”: more opportunities for pathogens to reach human populations, and more contact between those pathogens and the people they can infect.
What You Can Do
Understanding the pattern is not meant to produce fear. It is meant to produce preparation. Most of the practical steps available are simple and familiar โ but they matter more as the environmental window for these diseases widens.
Eliminate standing water around your home โ flower pots, gutters, birdbaths. These are mosquito breeding sites.
Use insect repellent consistently during summer months โ especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
Avoid open wounds in seawater or warm freshwater lakes โ the primary risk factors for Vibrio and Naegleria exposure.
Food hygiene โ especially with raw or undercooked shellfish, which are the primary dietary source of Vibrio vulnificus infection.
Follow public health alerts โ state and local health authorities issue timely warnings about elevated risk periods and affected areas.
Nose clips when swimming in warm natural freshwater โ the only direct protection against Naegleria fowleri entry.
