Kansas Issues Statewide High-Risk Warning

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a statewide high-risk West Nile virus warning on July 31, 2026. One case confirmed in 2026 so far — but last year, 37 Kansans were infected, 26 developed brain involvement, and one died. Here is what you need to know.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a statewide high-risk West Nile virus warning on July 31, 2026, based on elevated mosquito populations, above-normal summer temperatures, and historical case data. Only one case has been confirmed in Kansas in 2026 — a mild, non-neuroinvasive infection in the northeastern part of the state. But the seasonal trajectory and 2025 data make the warning serious: last year, 37 Kansans contracted West Nile virus, 26 developed neuroinvasive disease, and one died.

August and September are historically the peak months for West Nile virus transmission in Kansas. Now is the right time to understand the risk and take simple, effective precautions.

What Is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in Kansas and in the continental United States, causing approximately 2,000 reported infections nationally each year. It is spread primarily by Culex species mosquitoes — the common house mosquito — through their bite. It is not transmitted from person to person.

The virus was first detected in the US in 1999. Since then, it has established itself in all 48 contiguous states and become a predictable summer and early fall health risk, particularly in the Great Plains and Midwest where Culex mosquitoes thrive in warm, standing water conditions.

The KDHE's Weekly West Nile Risk Assessment classifies risk based on three factors: the number of mosquitoes identified through environmental surveillance, historical human case rates, and current weather conditions. A high-risk designation means you are at elevated probability of being bitten by a mosquito that may be carrying West Nile virus. As of July 31, 2026, the entire state of Kansas carries a high-risk designation. Adults over 50 and immunocompromised individuals should be particularly cautious during peak mosquito hours — dusk to dawn.

How Sick Can It Make You?

West Nile virus infection produces a wide range of outcomes:

⚠️ No Vaccine. No Specific Treatment.
There is no licensed vaccine against West Nile virus for humans. There is no antiviral medication that specifically treats it. Supportive care — IV fluids, pain management, respiratory support in severe cases — is the only available approach. This makes prevention through mosquito bite avoidance the only reliable protection. Early medical evaluation is still important if symptoms develop, because other treatable causes of similar symptoms can be ruled out and complications managed.

Who Is Most at Risk?

The 1-in-150 statistic for neuroinvasive disease is an average across the entire infected population. The risk is not evenly distributed. Two groups face dramatically higher risk of severe outcomes:

🔴 Highest Risk Groups
Adults 50 and older: Risk of neuroinvasive West Nile disease increases significantly with age. The immune system's ability to contain the virus before it reaches the nervous system diminishes, and pre-existing conditions become more common. The KDHE specifically recommends that people over 50 adjust outdoor activities to avoid peak mosquito hours.

Immunocompromised individuals: People with cancer, HIV, organ transplants, or those taking immune-suppressing medications face substantially elevated risk of severe disease. Anyone in this category should discuss West Nile virus precautions specifically with their healthcare provider during peak season.

For healthy adults under 50, the risk of serious illness from West Nile virus is low — though not zero. The 2025 Kansas data (37 cases, 26 neuroinvasive) illustrates that severe outcomes do occur in the general population. Precautions are warranted for everyone during high-risk conditions.

When Is the Risk Highest?

West Nile virus transmission in Kansas follows a consistent seasonal pattern, driven by Culex mosquito activity and temperature:

In 2025, Kansas began seeing West Nile cases in June, with the highest case counts in August and September, and cases continuing through November. The current statewide high-risk designation in late July and early August means the peak transmission window is imminent or already underway. Culex mosquitoes are most active from dusk until dawn — this window is the highest-risk period for bites.

How to Protect Yourself

✅ Four Steps That Actually Work
Avoid outdoor activity at dusk and dawn. This is the single most effective behavioral change. Culex mosquitoes — the primary West Nile carriers — feed most actively during the hours around sunset and sunrise. If you must be outside during these hours, use a repellent and wear protective clothing.
Wear long, loose-fitting clothing when outdoors. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants create a physical barrier. Loose-fitting fabric is harder for mosquitoes to bite through than tight clothing. Light-colored clothing makes mosquitoes easier to spot.
Use an EPA-approved repellent. DEET (at any concentration), Picaridin, IR3535, and oil of lemon eucalyptus are all effective and EPA-registered. Apply to exposed skin and clothing according to label directions. Reapply as directed, especially if sweating or after water contact. Store away from children.
Eliminate standing water around your home. Culex mosquitoes breed in standing water — birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, clogged gutters, water dishes, tarps, and any container that holds water for more than a few days. Empty, scrub, or cover these sources weekly. Drain puddles. Keep gutters clear. This reduces the local mosquito population and is one of the most effective community-level controls available.
Additional measures: Keep window and door screens in good repair. Use mosquito netting over strollers and playpens for infants. Check and treat decorative ponds or water features with EPA-approved larvicides if they cannot be emptied.
